Generally, carpet manufacturers recommend carpets are deep cleaned at least annually to prolong their life and many specify this in order to maintain the warranty they provide.
Of course, how much and how often can be dictated by many factors. A small spare bedroom carpet will have considerably less foot traffic than a busy hallway, so the amount of soiling will vary from room to room and home to home.
However, if you are cleaning for health rather than cosmetic purposes the same amount of dust mites or other allergens will build up regardless of footfall. Regular cleaning and the removal of dust mites dramatically reduces the effects these and other allergens can have on conditions such as asthma.
Houses with pets and children may need cleaning more regularly than homes owned by single people with no animals. Houses with gardens particularly in the country will likely need more regular cleaning than flats in towns or cities.
Regardless of all these factors regular deep cleaning (every 10-12months) will reduce the damage caused by the build-up of loose soil which over time has a detrimental effect on the look, feel and lifespan of your floorcovering.
